Gestational diabetes is a glucose intolerance that develops during pregnancy. Early diagnosis and effective treatment are important because gestational diabetes can cause serious maternal and fetal complications. Diet and exercise are the first line treatment options of gestational diabetes, while insulin therapy is the first line medical treatment option. Nurses’ play an important role in education and support of gestational diabetes because they provide day-to-day care for their patients. In this paper I will discuss the increasing prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus, as well as the nurses’ role in caring for patients with gestational diabetes mellitus and improving patient outcomes. The Implications of Nursing Care for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus Pregnancy and childbirth is a time of great hope and joyful anticipation, but it is associated with risk to health and survival for the mother and for the infant. Pregnancy is a period by which numerous metabolic and hormonal changes take place (Caysens G. Boulvain M, 2016).
